We tried to make it a holiday-themed podcast, and kept things pretty on topic of gifts, both good and bad, from our childhood. I’m sure the topic of poop is in there somewhere, though.

We returned to Sixty-Four Fourteen Studios and chatted with Padrick, who was entertaining as always.

The topics ranged from businesses and Black Friday to computers to tonsils to white bread. Don’t bother asking how that happened, you should be used to it by now.

What is posted here is the last Podcast we recorded while living in the Sunshine State. Meaning, that from now on, we will be recording all of the shows in Ohio, Ashley and I’s new home. Sadly, that means no more Padrick or Ben. But that does mean we will hopefully still be able to entertain you, dear listener.

We’re looking for new guests and trying to get new fans.

We’ve made it all the way to six episodes!

We had our first major scramble when our special guest ran into some things and couldn’t make it. So if it sounds like we are coming up with topics as we go, that’s because we were.

We talked about space, sodas, and, of course, poop. All the important things in life, right?

We had the very lovely Allison in the makeshift studio, which we have named Sixty-Four Fourteen Studios. or 6414 Studios. I have no idea.

We talked a lot about Warped Tour and how hot it was and, as usual, ended up talking about poop. There was some discussion of Y2K, high school lockers and chick flicks in there as well.

Yeah. I have no idea how we progressed from one topic to the next.

Anyway, the next podcast will be on either Sunday or Monday from St. Augustine with Justine, who has a crazy roommate. There are also lots of wonderful things about her, but that is the most entertaining.

We had special guest Will in the makeshift studio, which was just Pad’s dinner table.

I think this is the most well put-together episode we have done, despite some continuing problems with the mic levels. We’ll figure that out, I promise.

But hey, here it is. We’re making progress!

Not only did this one sound a lot better and was a little more cohesive and focused, we managed to get intro and outro music. I don’t think we’re planning on using the same music every time.

That is the main series of topic. I am sure there is more, but whatever.

However, due to her brilliance, we fixed the problem, and I present to you fine and beautiful listeners This Is The Podcast Episode One.

Warning: This Podcast contains language that you normally won’t hear on the radio, so be prepared before you click play.

Things we talked about:

1) Explaining the Podcast and the problems we ran into.
2) Talking about the majestic lion painting that is hanging in Ben’s living room.
3) Us buying a mixer from a guy named Fuzzy.
4) Our sound effects machine with cool hip-hop horns.
5) Having to edit out last names of people who ignored me when I said don’t say last names.
6) The great Funky story. Funky was a homeless man who Ben let live on his floor when he was an RA while at school. I cannot stress enough how great of a story this really is.

Also some things to keep in mind: This is the very first Podcast attempt for all of us, so we sometimes repeat some of the things we are saying. And, as I said before, Padrick had to leave in the middle of everything, the second microphone was way too hot without us knowing, Ben’s house-mate came into the living room in the middle of everything so we sort of had to pause a little, and with all the distractions it all sounds really hectic.

I promise that for This Is A Podcast Episode Two, things will get better and we’ll have a much more cohesive show. Don’t let this one fool you.

From the beginning, we had problems with our mixer and wizard box being able to relay audio on more than one channel at a time. I believe I have fixed that problem moving forward, but it took Ben about two hours to get us to a point where we could even record anything.

Not having much space, things were kind of scattered and stacked where they could go:

But, after two hours or prep, we finally got the thing going.

We recorded a pretty hard to follow and listen to show because people had to leave in the middle due to the time it took to get ready, not to mention the fact that only two mics were working and we had to switch back and forth. Oh, and one of the microphones was turned up way louder than the other, so rapid interjections on mic No.2 are blazingly loud until about halfway through.

Once everything was recorded, we ran into yet another problem: It was taking hours to upload on Mediafire, and once it was uploaded, it was either not embedding as a found file or was showing up corrupted:

I’m still trying to figure out if it had to do with my Internet or if it is something to do with Mediafire itself.

Or, hell, it might just be operator error.

To take a big ol’ dump on what was already a bad day, I woke up the next morning and found out via my girlfriend that there is already a Podcast called “This is a Podcast.”

I had to scramble and rename this Podcast “This Is The Podcast.”

I’m hoping that is enough to get me not sued.

All that to say this: We’re kind of rebooting on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

We’re going to record another show – but this time we know how to set up the microphones and we know how to hopefully upload it once we get on better Internet and we’re no longer using the name of another Podcast.

Fingers crossed.

Craigslist – along with Ashley’s help – got me this for $40.

Now we have everything we need except for some stands, which Amazon said won’t be here in time for this Podcast, but will be for the second.

Tomorrow I am going along with Ashley to try and find some more microphones and a splitter so that we can turn Ben’s wizard box into something that will hold four inputs. That, and some mic stands, because I want this to be so profesh.

I figured as an addition to this update of just telling you that the Podcast will be ready on Thursday, I’d introduce you to the people that will be involved.

First, me:

I got those glasses in an X-mas gift exchange last year. They are supposed to make you see in HD. While that extraordinary claim is indeed bullshit, they make me kind of look like a cross between Kim Jong Il and a grandma, which really could be considered the same, fashion-wise.

Next, my friend Ashley:

She has the least interesting photo on here really, but trust me, she’s an interesting person. She just falls into the trap that nearly all females fall into as far as photos on the Internet are concerned – the OMG NO THIS MAKES ME LOOK ____ TAKE IT DOWN disease. She’s my best friend and a fellow fan of Podcasts, so I put up with it. She’ll have plenty of stories to tell about a semi-crazy ex who ended up sending another person on this list of folks a free T-shirt.

Next is Ben:

Ben is our go-to audio guy. He’s one half of the extremely talented Orlando-based Kill To Win. This DJing quality made him great with this kind of thing. Oh, and he owned a lot of the audio equipment already, including the famed wizard box, meaning I didn’t have to buy it. Ben is the second most interesting person I know, and has some of the best stories to tell. By the time this group has to split, Ben is going to tell the story of Funky, the roaming homeless tattoo artist. We might need a whole show for that.

I said second most interesting because Padrick exists:

Padrick has “Eat it like a sandwich” tattooed on his arm, has conquered alligator-infested lagoons, tried to fight a toddler in an Applebees, and drives a car that has run into more things in Orlando than it hasn’t. To try and go into any of that more would require more space than WordPress allows and rob the Podcast of some of it’s chances to record this stuff for mass consumption once and for all.

So here we all are.

Again, that’s this Thursday, July 8, for the very first This Is A Podcast, starring all of those fine folks up there.

My goal is, over time, to bring in more of my friends and people we all know to share stories and have conversations with us. But, hopefully, until half of us leave Florida in a few months, this will be the core group of kids.

That is, if Ben’s wizard box doesn’t take a dump.

While I am not as eloquent as Jeff is, I share the same passion for creating something others can benefit from. I have high hopes that even if our only listeners are our friends, that, at the very least, we have somehow connected with people we might not have been able to otherwise. And at the very most, we can create new friendships with listeners across the country, while getting to do the thing that I enjoy more than anything else – spending time hanging out with my friends, telling awesome stories and laughing until I cry.

And I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.

Well, I mean, I do know. It’s going to be the website where I am going to post the links so people can listen to the Podcast that I am going to create with my friends.

But I don’t know where that will lead.

Most likely it will just be a few people who listen out of morbid curiosity, who happen to be friends of mine, for a few weeks. After that it will teeter off. Oh well. I’m out the cost of a few old microphones, adapters and microphone stands. That and I’ll have managed to fill the void in my brain that thrives on producing something that has been left desolate after I stopped working at the student paper.

If, though, people actually do listen to this thing for a while, I’ll consider it a success. When it comes down to it, I’m doing this because it is something I have always wanted to do. I’ve been interested in talk radio since middle school. I grew up an avid listener of Orlando’s 104.1 WTKS, an entertainment-based talk radio station. I went to college really wanting to do radio, but I was lured away by the potentials of journalism.

If only I knew.

Recently though I have become a really big fan of Podcasts around town. The main one being A Mediocre Time with Tom and Dan (www.TomandDan.com), who was the subject of an article I wrote for the student newspaper at UCF. When I was talking to those guys,  they talked about how great of a medium a Podcast is, as it is readily accessible by tons of potential listeners and dirt-cheap to get off the ground. Eventually the words they were saying sunk in, and I decided to give it a go, because I had the things I needed.

Computer, check. Some microphones, check. A friend who knows how to do audio things? Check.

Really interesting people telling funny stories and having funny conversations? Oh, you bet that is a check.

If you are looking for in-depth commentary about political matters, this is not the Podcast for you.

What this will be is a collection of the moronic, interesting and pointless things my friends and I talk about nearly any time you put us in the same vicinity. Except they will be recorded for you all to enjoy.

So, hopefully, with a handful of junk electronics and nothing to really say, we can make something you all will enjoy.
